The Department of Music at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth is a vibrant, stimulating and friendly place in which to study, with all the benefits of being one of the Republic of Ireland's leading research communities. Situated in the historic leafy South Campus of NUI Maynooth, the Department of Music has an energetic and enthusiastic staff team, made up of specialists operating at the forefront of a varied range of disciplines. We offer a lively undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, with the key areas of performance, composition, musicology and music technology lying at the heart of our activities.

Undergraduate Programmes

Three programmes are offered at the undergraduate level: a BMus degree, a BA degree, and a BA (Music Technology).  More detail on each of these strands is available in the section on Undergraduate Programmes. The Erasmus exchange programme, leading to an international degree, allows students to study abroad for an additional year, and is available to all undergraduates.

Postgraduate Programmes

The Department of Music offers 2 types of degree programmes at postgraduate level:

(1) Taught (MA) and 

Our MA programmes are aimed at graduates with a passion for music and a desire for intellectual challenge, who wish to enhance creative, performance, technological, research and analytical skills developed at undergraduate level, and improve their qualifications.

Full-time and part-time MA programmes are offered in Composition, Performance & Musicology, and Musicology. Normal entrance requirements for these programmes are a 2:1 UG degree or higher in a music-related discipline. A one-year MA is also offered in Computer Music. Applications are welcomed from graduates from any background with a 2:1 degree or higher. A Postgraduate Diploma in Music Technology is also available, running concurrently with the MA in Computer Music.

(2) Research (MLitt and PhD).
