This programme is designed for students with interests in music who are seeking a qualification in the areas of audio and information technologies. The programme covers general elements of music, such as basic theory and notation, as well as composition and aspects of popular music. From informatics, students will also explore computer programming and signal processing. The programme also offers specialised modules in sound engineering and computer music. These are taught in state-of-the-art studios and computer music laboratories. In addition to the music technology-specific modules, students also choose two Arts subjects in First Year and continue with one of the chosen subjects from First year in the second and third year, to complement their degree. Depending on interests and abilities, participants will choose to concentrate on audio production, music programming or composition in the final year. The programme strives to maintain a balance between theory and practice to ensure that students gain experience working with the essential concepts and skills involved in music technology.
Applicants are not required to have taken the Leaving Certificate in music, however they are expected to have some music reading skills and knowledge of basic elements of music theory (eg. scales, intervals and chords).
This programme will provide technical skills and qualifications for a number of music and media industry positions. They include: music and sound production for recording, radio and television; music and media software development; sound effects design for the games industry; music and arts management positions; composition for multimedia and films.
NUI Maynooth also offers an MA in Computer Music, which concentrates on the Music Technology areas of electroacoustic composition, musical signal processing and software development. Similar programmes are also offered in other Irish and UK universities. Research-based Master’s degree and PhD in Music Technology related areas are also offered by the Music Department.
